Global Politics of Smell – Othering and Sensing of Communities through Odor
A transdisciplinary Travel of Concepts commenting on Othering and Sensing of Communities through Smell.
Smells have the unique ability to intervene in human experiences. Unlike light and sound, which are based on waves, smell is bound to physical particles that, to be perceived, must literally penetrate the human brain. These particles can immediately associate with emotions and memories in the limbic system. The immediacy and forcefulness of smell makes odor a powerful tool for social organization. For most animals smell is their first means of communication. Odor can be either alluring or repelling, significantly impacting our interpersonal compatibility.
