Call for Data Pitches: DARIAH-CH Study Day 2024 – Between FAIR and CARE

The third Study Day of DARIAH-CH, the Swiss branch of the European research infrastructure DARIAH, will take place at the HGK Basel on 22 November 2024 under the title ‘Between FAIR and CARE: challenges and opportunities for data management’.

The third Study Day of DARIAH-CH, the Swiss branch of the European research infrastructure DARIAH (Digital Research Infrastructure for the Arts and Humanities), will take place at the HGK Basel on 22 November 2024 under the title ‘Between FAIR and CARE: challenges and opportunities for data management’. The topic of this study day is the challenges associated with the FAIR and CARE principles for the arts and humanities.

In addition to a panel discussion, presentations of data stewardship initiatives and the DaSCH data workflow, a central component of the event will be the presentation of data handling practices and related topics from current research projects.

In recent years, FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) has become a buzzword in the arts and humanities as a guiding principle for the management of scientific data. At the same time, the Global Indigenous Data Alliance published the CARE (Collective benefit, Authority to control, Responsibility, Ethics) principles for indigenous data management in 2019. Applied to scientific data, the CARE principles relate to how scientific data is used appropriately and with the aim of improving people's well-being.

In this context, DARIAH-CH is launching a call for data pitches on research data in the arts and humanities: Researchers - especially PhD students and postdocs - are invited to present the nature and specifics of their research data and discuss what challenges they see in relation to the data lifecycle in the context of the FAIR and CARE principles. Pitches are also welcome on data that have not yet been collected and that could pose particular challenges for data management in the area of conflict between FAIR and CARE approaches.

Researchers who would like to present their project to experts and members of the scientific community are invited to submit an abstract of around 500 words describing their project, data and challenges by 30 September 2024.

The detailed call with further information is available here.

Switzerland has been a full member of the European research infrastructure DARIAH (Digital Research Infrastructure for the Arts and Humanities) since 2023. The national node DARIAH-CH is located at the Swiss National Data and Service Centre for the Humanities (DaSCH).
