Dr. Frederik Herman
Frederik Herman is lecturer and research fellow at the School of Education — Institute for Primary Education. He joined the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland on 1 March 2018. He first graduated as a primary school teacher in 2001 and then studied Educational Sciences at the Ghent University, where he graduated in 2006. He completed his doctorate on “20th century school culture” at the University of Leuven in 2010. After spending two years as lecturer and coordinator at two teacher training colleges, he joined the University of Luxembourg as a postdoctoral researcher in 2013. At the Institute of Education and Society (InES) and, later onwards, at the Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C²DH), he has been involved in the FNR-funded project “Fabricating Modern Societies: Industries of Reform as Educational Responses to Societal Challenges (ca.1880-1930)” (FAMOSO). During this period his research was concerned with industrial entrepreneurship, early experimental psychology (e.g. fatigue studies, psychophysiology, labour sciences) and professional orientation and vocational training at the turn of the nineteenth to the twentieth century in Luxembourg. With Prof. Dr. Karin Priem (University of Luxembourg), he recently edited the volume „Fabricating Modern Societies: Education, Body and Mind in the „Age of Steel“ (submitted).
Frederik Herman’s research focusses on socio-cultural, material and visual histories of education. His publications have dealt with topics such as material and visual school culture (e.g. biographies of school desks, school buildings and classrooms); the entanglement of bodies, minds and technologies within educational settings (e.g. measuring and training apparatuses in the context of professional orientation, vocational training and rehabilitation of maimed soldiers); educational mentalities and realities (e.g. school discipline and corporal punishment); the visual and material as invaluable sources for historians of education and cultural historians. His other research work concerns cultural learning, cultural literacy and the associated processes of heritage making, identity construction and community/nation building.
