The International Master of Design UIC/HGK (MDes/MAS) is a collaboration of the University of Illinois, Chicago (UIC) and the Institute Digital Communication Environments / The Basel School of Design of the FHNW Academy of Art and Design (HGK FHNW). It addresses students who want to be part of an international program – graphic designers, visual communication designers and media designers, with a bachelor's degree or an equivalent degree and professional design experience.
You will graduate with a double degree: an internationally accredited Master of Design (MDes) from the UIC and the Swiss equivalent – a MAS in Graphic Design I, Iconicism and Graphic Design II, Mediality – from the HGK FHNW. Students are matriculated and registered at UIC with classes being held in Basel.
The curriculum of the Master course is influenced by the tradition of Swiss Graphic Design and the current academic perspective and standards of the Digital Communication Environments Institute / The Basel School of Design at the FHNW Academy of Art and Design.
You will be given the opportunity to be at the cutting edge of discourse concerning image theory and design-oriented research as well as media technology. Through project oriented design work you will deepen your process-oriented design skills, and enhance your analytical competence in image theory and the media sciences.
Furthermore, the program is offering you a variety of opportunities, such as international internships, studying in a rich foreign cultural environment, and an international group of students and professors, who are involved in the current discussions of the internationally oriented design practice and its issues of design research.

Through the propagation of digital media and the concomitant democratization of communication channels, the critical approach to visual and interaction-based design has manifestly gained in importance, not least because it has fundamentally changed the significance of information and communication in society.
