Apply now for our joint PhD programme between the FHNW Academy of Art and Design in Basel and the University of Art and Design Linz: MAKE/SENSE.
The MAKE/SENSE PhD programme promotes practice-based research in art and design. Operating within three future-facing areas of concern: Planetarity, Materiality and Response-ability, our programme focuses on the relevance and potentials of practice-based research in art and design for sociocultural, political, and ecological transformations.
We welcome applications to the PhD study programme from candidates from all fields of art, design and related fields with an MA or an equivalent degree.
Our next application deadline is June 1st 2021 for the study programme starting in September 2021.
We will open up to six non-funded PhD positions. We offer a 3-year structured curriculum attuned at practice-based research skills. PhD candidates will have supervisors from FHNW Academy of Art and Design in Basel and University of Art and Design Linz. We encourage the candidates to consider future supervisors and contact them in advance. PhD candidates will be enrolled at the Kunstuniversität Linz. The programme takes place at the FHNW Academy of Art and Design in Basel.
The FHNW Academy of Art and Design in Basel provides media production and library facilities, work places, and lab and workshop facilities. We also offer support in obtaining funding, e.g. through placements in SNSF projects or Doc.ch grants. Additionally, we offer a flexible programme structure to allow students to keep up with other obligations.
Applications may be submitted in English or German to apply.refline.ch, and should include the following:
1. Project outline (3-5 A4 pages) including:
- Research question
- State of the art
- Relevance and topicality regarding areas of concern: planetarity, materiality, response-ability
- Proposed methods
- Proposed outcomes
- Timeline
2. Portfolio of artistic and design work
3. Curriculum Vitae, inkl. research record
4. Copies of relevant diplomas
Admission procedure:
1st round: candidates to be notified of results by Tuesday, June 15th, 2021.
2nd round: Interviews are scheduled after June 16th, 2021
Final decision: June 28th, 2021
