Abdullah Kahraman hat einen Abschluss in Bioinformatik von der Fachhochschule in Gießen (Hessen, Deutschland). Erste Kontakte zur Industrie knüpfte er während Praktika bei Sanofi-Aventis AG und Bayer Schering Pharma AG. Für seine Diplomarbeit und spätere Promotion ging er nach Cambridge (UK), um am European Bioinformatics Institute im Labor von Prof. Dr. Janet Thornton an Proteinstrukturen und Protein-Kleinmolekül-Interaktionen zu arbeiten. Später wechselte er an die ETH Zürich, um als Postdoc im Labor von Prof. Ruedi Aebersold und Prof. Paola Picotti strukturelle Proteomforschung und molekulare Modellierung zu betreiben.

Während seines zweiten Postdocs im Labor von Prof. Christian Mering wurde er Teil des internationalen Pan-Cancer-Analysis-of-Whole-Genomes-Projekts und begann mit der Analyse von Next-Generation-Sequencing-Daten mit dem Schwerpunkt auf der Identifizierung von Veränderungen im alternativen Spleissmuster in Pan-Cancer-Proben. Im Jahr 2017 übernahm er die Leitung der klinischen Bioinformatik am Departement für Pathologie und Molekularpathologie des Universitätsspitals Zürich und half beim Aufbau des Molecular Tumor Profiling Labors, in dem diagnostische Krebstests von Foundation Medicine Inc und Roche AG eingesetzt werden.

Abdullah Kahraman hat unter an mehreren Publikationen in renommierten wissenschaftlichen Zeitschriften wie Nature und Science mitgewirkt, gewann mehrere wissenschaftliche Förderprogramme, und ist Gründer und Organisator der Seminarreihen “NanoTalks" und Symposia "Clinics Meets Data Science”.

Welcome Dr Abdullah Kahraman at the Institute of Chemistry and Bioanalytics

Abdullah Kahraman has a bioinformatics degree from the University of Applied Sciences in Giessen (Hessen, Germany). He made first contacts with the industry during internships with Sanofi-Aventis AG and Bayer Schering Pharma AG. For his diploma thesis and subsequently to do his Ph.D., he went to Cambridge (UK) to work on protein structures and protein-small molecule interactions at the European Bioinformatics Institute in the lab of Prof. Dr. Janet Thornton. Later he moved to the ETH Zurich to conduct his postdoctoral research on structural proteomics and molecular modelling in the lab of Prof. Ruedi Aebersold and Prof. Paola Picotti.

During his second postdoc in the lab of Prof. Christian Mering, he became part of the international Pan-Cancer-Analysis-of-Whole-Genomes project and started to analyse Next-Generation-Sequencing data with a focus on identifying changes in alternative splicing pattern in pan-cancer. In 2017 he took up the Head of Clinical Bioinformatics role at the Department of Pathology and Molecular Pathology in the University Hospital in Zurich and helped to set up the Molecular Tumor Profiling lab, which is running diagnostic cancer assays from Foundation Medicine Inc and Roche AG.

Abdullah Kahraman has amongst other published multiple papers in the scientific journals Nature und Science, won multiple research funding programs und is founder and organiser of the seminar series “NanoTalks” and symposia “Clinics Meets Data Science”.
