Learning and working

    We pass on our expertise and act as a learning space and workplace for students, teachers, researchers and other interested parties.

    Workplaces

    Arbeitsplätze in der Bibliothek FHNW

    A wide range of reading and workstations are avalaible at the on-site libraries. The workstations are equipped with electricity and WiFi and are accessible during the opening hours of the respective library.

    You are allowed to take your bags and rucksacks with you. It is not permitted to eat or use your cell phone in the libraries. Drinks in sealable containers are allowed.

    Workplaces

    • Basel (HGK): No special equipment available.
    • Basel (Music): No special equipment available.
    • Brugg-Windisch: 1 research PC on each floor. 1 PC on the 1st floor. All desks, except 4 central research stations, are 73 cm high but not height adjustable. Headphones can be borrowed from the information desk.
    • Muttenz: A PC workstation for people with visual impairments, which can be adjusted for easier operation. Headphones can be borrowed from the information desk. The large font software ‘zoomtext’ is installed on the device. The desks are 70cm high, but not height adjustable.
    • Olten: Workstations in the library are wheelchair accessible. The standard-height desks are not height adjustable.
    • Solothurn: No special equipment available.

    Assistance dogs

    • Access accompanied by assistance dogs is permitted in Basel, Brugg-Windisch, Olten and Solothurn.
    • Muttenz: Assistance dogs permitted to a limited extent, authorisation required.

    Lifts

    • Basel (HGK): The media library is located on the 8th floor and can be reached by lift. The HGK building can be reached at ground level from the nearby tram stop. Access for assistance dogs is permitted.
    • Basel (Music): The library of the Academy of Music has a lift and can be reached at ground level from the nearest tram stop.
    • Brugg-Windisch: The library and all other floors can be reached by lift. The library is located on the 1st floor in building 6 and there is also a lift to the 2nd and 3rd floors within the library. The floors in the lift are also labelled in Braille and voice cues announce the floors.
    • Muttenz: The library and all other floors can be reached by lift. The library is located on the 3rd floor, the north lift is directly in front of the library. Voice cues before entering the lift, no Braille.
    • Olten: The library is located on the ground floor of the Olten campus and can be reached by lift from the underground car park. The floors are labelled in Braille, no voice cues.
    • Solothurn: The library is located on the ground floor and is therefore easily accessible by wheelchair. The other floors can be reached by lift (on the south-west wall of the cafeteria. It can be operated with a Eurokey.

    Returning media

    • Basel (HGK): The return box in the reception area of the tower block is accessible with the FH-Card even outside the opening hours of the media library.
    • Basel (Music): Media returns at the information desk.
    • Brugg-Windisch: The return machine is located on the 1st floor to the right of the library and can be accessed during building opening hours. With the FH card, you can also enter the building and return media outside library opening hours.
    • Muttenz: The return box is located on the 3rd floor to the left of the north lift and can be accessed. With the FH card, you can also enter the building and return media outside library opening hours.
    • Olten: The media return in the Olten library is accessible during building opening hours. There is a ‘return mailbox’ to the right of the library entrance and a return table in the library.
    • Solothurn: The return boxes are located in front of the building entrance.

    Media stock

    • Basel (HGK): The aisles between the shelves are wide enough for wheelchairs. Due to the low shelf height, most media are easily accessible. The self-service lending machine is height adjustable.
    • Basel (Music): The shelves are 1.20 metres apart. The self-checkout machine and the information desk are accessible.
    • Brugg-Windisch: Access to the library is also possible with a wheelchair. Not all media are accessible. The distance between the shelves is 110cm. Two self-lending stations are located on the 1st floor and can be reached without barriers.
    • Muttenz: Access to the library is also possible with a wheelchair. Not all media are accessible. The distance between the shelves is 90cm.
    • Olten: Access to media in the library is not always possible. Maneuvering around the library with a wheelchair is not possible.
    • Solothurn: Access to the stock is possible in a wheelchair, but not all media are accessible due to the height of the shelves. The distance between the shelves is between 87 and 89 cm.

    Wheelchair parking spaces

    • Basel (HGK): Take the access road via Florenz-Strasse in the direction of the tower block (D). To lower the bollard system in front of the campus, please press the bell. You will then be connected to the reception in the tower block (D).
    • Basel (Music): No parking spaces available.
    • Brugg-Windisch: A wheelchair-accessible car park is located directly next to Building 6, where the library is located. Further parking spaces are available in the Campus Parking underground car park.
    • Muttenz: There are several marked car parks directly in front of the campus.
    • Olten: There are three wheelchair-accessible parking spaces in the underground car park at Von Roll-Strasse 10.
    • Solothurn: No car parks available.

    Toilets

    • Basel (HGK): There are accessible toilets on every floor. There is also a nappy-changing table.
    • Basel (Music): There is an accessible toilet in the library.
    • Brugg-Windisch: There are accessible, all-gender toilets with a nappy-changing table on every floor.
    • Muttenz: There are accessible, all-gender toilets with a nappy-changing table on every floor.
    • Olten: The toilet facilities on the Olten campus are located in the basement, on the 1st and 2nd floor and can be reached by lift. Accessible toilets are available on each of these floors. There are no toilets on the ground floor. The toilets are labelled with Braille pictograms.
    • Solothurn: The women's toilets on the ground floor and 2nd floor are accessible.

    Internet access

    WiFi

    FHNW employees have access to the FHNW network via the ‘fhnw-private’ WiFi.
    FHNW students and all members of participating universities in Switzerland and abroad have access to the "eduroam" WiFi.
    External users have free internet access via the guest network with their own device.

    VPN

    VPN (Virtual Private Network) offers the possibility to use internal resources outside the FHNW network. Members of the FHNW can access the FHNW Library's e-media worldwide via VPN.

    Research stations

    The research stations offers free access to the swisscovery research portal. Library users can access licensed e-media on site at the research stations of the site libraries and download them via USB stick.

    Printing, copying and scanning

    Members of the FHNW have access to multifunction printers for printing, copying and scanning. Instructions and prices can be found on Inside.
    External users can use the function Print in City in the Brugg-Windisch, Muttenz and Vera Oeri libraries in Basel.

    Book scanners are also available in all local libraries, which can be used free of charge with a personal USB stick.
