Curriculum Vitae
Günter Wehinger, born in Austria where he earned a conservatory degree in 1982, subsequently moved to the USA in 1987 to study with the great James Newton in Los Angeles. After a two year period in San Francisco he returned to Europe. He dove into a musical career that has included both jazz and classical performances as well as intensive teaching duties (Music Universities of Zürich and Basel).
Wehinger‘s flute ranges from pristine and romantic lyricism to hair-raising multiphonics, screams and groans. Today he is one of the premier flutists in contemporary jazz. He released over ten CDs as a leader or co-leader with top notch musicians like Art Lande, Michael Cain, Peter Madsen, Anthony Cox, Bogdan Holownia, Pheeroan AkLaff, Paul McCandless and Marek Balata. Besides performing in Europe he toured several times in the United States and in Japan with various ensembles.
When on tour he is often invited to give master-classes or workshops at colleges and music universities (New England Conservatory, San Francisco State University, CU Denver and Boulder...).
Wehinger is also a prolific composer. He wrote music for orchestra and various ensembles where he combines jazz and classical music. And he is the author of a jazz book: „Die kleine Geschichte des Jazz“
