Letizia Viola
Letizia Viola is a bassoonist originally from Sicily who lives with her family in Basel. She studied in the concert classes of Milan Turkovic and Sergio Azzolini and was an orchestra academist with the Berliner Philharmoniker. From 2002 to 2017, she was deputy principal bassoonist with the Bremen Philharmonic. In recent years, she has specialised in playing historical instruments at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in the classes of Donna Agrell and Pep Borras.
From 2017-2023 she was a research assistant at the FHNW Academy of Music, Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in the SNF project "Out of the bass register - uncovering the organology, pedagogy, and performance practice of small-sized bassoons from the 18th and 19th centuries".
She performs regularly with ensembles such as La Cetra Basel, Kammerorchester Basel, Il Pomodoro, La Scintilla, Baltasarneumann Ensemble, Freiburger Barockorchester, the Freitag Akademie and others.
She teaches historical bassoon at the Hochschule Trossingen and modern bassoon at the Music School of Basel as well as at the music schools of Muttenz and Birsfelden. She has been a lecturer in didactics of historical bassoon at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis since 2022.
