Data Science Student Projects – What’s the Story?

Student teams from the Data Science program tackle real-world challenges from companies in industry, trade, and the public sector during a semester.

Both companies and students benefit from such joint projects. Companies receive flexible sup-port in analyzing data and developing algorithms and machine learning models, while students grow through the challenge of real project and teamwork. For all parties involved, university pro-jects can be the first step towards longer term collaborations.

    Benefits For Your Organization

Analytical Studies and Proof of Concept

Do you want to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of your company or test something new? Let our teams of students use machine learning to optimize your customer selection, im-prove products, and pilot them with you.

    Data-driven Decision Making

Do you lack the time or expertise to analyze the data of your product portfolio or customer base? Our students combine information, identify key drivers, and extract quantitative decision-making analysis to support your strategic decisions.

    Fresh Perspectives on Internal Challenges

Do you want to unlock the potential of your company's data? The student teams analyze and visualize relevant relationships in your data, check their quality, and evaluate new analytical model approaches for you.

    Experience Agile Project Management

Do you want to experience an agile approach to teamwork in project management? Gain in-sights into the world of agile planning and risk management methods and fast feedback loops with continuous gains in knowledge.

    What Our Clients Provide

Project description with goals and questions
The project description is usually very brief and fits on one A4 page. Project goals and questions are specified by you.

    Availability and Quality of Data
Data and information can be provided in the form of files or interfaces. Data security and confi-dentiality are important to us. If the project involves sensitive data, it will be anonymized, and all parties involved will sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA).

Time Commitment: per Semester, One-hour Meetings Every Three Weeks
Customer feedback is important to us. As a project partner, you will be in regular contact with the student teams. Every three weeks or so, you will evaluate the project progress. During the se-mester, this will require around 10 hours of your time in total.

    Project Fee
Projects involving students in their 1st/2nd semester are free of charge. From the 3rd/4th se-mester, a contribution of CHF 1500.- excl. VAT will be charged. For partners and sponsors of the FHNW, projects are free of charge.

How We Implement Student Projects in Data Science

    • Agile Collaboration with Clients
Working closely with clients is important to us. The insights gained flow continuously into the objectives, so that the questions can be adapted accordingly.
    • Teams of 2 to 8 Students
Depending on the project, two to eight students work on a project assignment.
    • Collaboration with Institutes and Professors
The institutes of the FHNW School of Computer Science work together in an interdisciplinary manner, providing technical support to the students in processing the projects, and accompany the project development.
