Prof. Dr. Thomas Villiger

In 2019, Thomas Villiger joined the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW) as the head of the bioprocess technology laboratory. Prior to this role, he accumulated over a decade of experience in the biopharmaceutical industry. His career spanned positions in cell culture development at Merck-Serono and Novartis, as well as various roles in commercial production facilities at Novartis and Biogen.

His main research focus is on the development and optimization of novel biopharmaceutical modalities and their manufacturing processes. This involves the use of novel experimental technologies together with modern analytical methods as well as mathematical modelling to maximise both yield and product quality.

Thomas Villiger holds a Master’s degree in Chemical and Bioengineering from ETH Zurich (Willi Studer Prize for best graduate), where he also completed his PhD in the group of Prof. Massimo Morbidelli with distinction (ETH Medal). In 2024, he obtained an Executive Master in Business Administration from IMD in Lausanne.
