Thomas Villiger is the Head of the Bioprocess Technology Laboratory at the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW), a position he has held since 2019. Prior to this role, he accumulated over a decade of experience in the biopharmaceutical industry. His career spanned positions in cell culture development at Merck-Serono and Novartis, as well as various roles in commercial production at Novartis and Biogen.
His research focuses on advancing novel biopharmaceutical modalities and optimizing their manufacturing processes. This involves the integration and further development of cutting-edge experimental technologies, advanced process analytical methods, and mathematical modeling to enhance both product yield and quality.
Thomas Villiger holds a Master’s degree in Chemical and Bioengineering from ETH Zurich (Willi Studer Prize for best graduate), where he also completed his PhD in the group of Prof. Massimo Morbidelli with distinction (ETH Medal). In 2024, he obtained an Executive Master in Business Administration from IMD Lausanne.
