Digitalisation in neurology – challenges and perspectives
The rapidly evolving landscape of digital technology presents both significant opportunities and formidable challenges in the field of neurology. This presentation aims to explore the multifaceted impact of digitalisation on neurological research, clinical practice, and patient care. Dr. Marcus D’Souza, a leading expert in neurology and CEO of Neurostatus-UHB AG, will share his extensive experience spanning nearly two decades in the development and implementation of digital tools for neurological assessment.

Athina Papadopoulou
Athina Papadopoulou is a neurologist working as an attending physician («Oberärztin») and head of research group clinical research of the University Hospital Basel.
PD Dr. med. Athina Papadopoulou

What does the eye tell us about the brain: Retinal OCT in neurological disease
The retina is part of our central nervous system (CNS) and contains the first CNS-neurons of the visual pathway. Due to the anatomy, the retina is the most accessible part of our CNS, since it can be examined and visualized by light sent through the pupils. Thus, imaging methods of the retina can give us important insights into pathology in the rest of the visual pathway, and the brain in general. The optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive, imaging technique based on a principle similar to sonography, but using light instead of sound. It can generate high-resolution images of the retina including its different layers and quantify axons and neurons of the CNS. In her talk, Athina will explain why OCT images are important in the diagnosis and monitoring of neurological diseases, such as multiple sclerosis, neuromyelitis optical spectrums disorders, neurodegenerative disorders and intracranial hypertension.
