Targeted vitamin delivery to the microbiome for improved gut health

14. August 2024

The human gut microbiome has an important nutritional role by enabling the digestion of carbohydrates mostly stemming from plant cell walls. A balanced a diverse composition of the microbiome is crucial for gut health and influences the well-being. The groups of Prof. Imanidis (IPT) and Prof. Lipps have developed a patent-protected formulation for the targeted delivery of drugs to the colon (Imanidis et al., 2020). In this project formulations for the targeted release of vitamins in the colon were developed and the release behaviour in the human gut was investigated with a scintigraphy study. Moreover a stable consortium of gut microbes was developed in order to be able to study colonic drug release in vitro.
