Working group
Environmental Biotechnology (Philippe Corvini)

Job title
Intern

Tasks at FHNW
My work consists of isolating different bacterial strains capable of degrading pharmaceuticals such as enalapril, atenolol and diclofenac, with the aim of using them in a bioremediation strategy to decontaminate water polluted by these compounds. For this I carry out tests in which I monitor the degradation of different pharmaceuticals by bacteria from the wastewater using HPLC analyses, then I isolate the bacterial strains, I prepare them for Sanger sequencing analysis (colony PCR, electrophoresis, and DNA cleanup) and I carry out new degradation tests for each of the strains.

Work background/studies
I have held a “Brevet de Technicien Superieur (BTS)” in biotechnologies since 2023 and I am currently a 4th year student in biological engineering at the University of Technology of Compiègne (UTC). I have already completed 2 internships lasting several weeks in the field of environmental microbiology and bioremediation within the CNRS Chrono-environment laboratory in Montbeliard in France.
