Prix Bartholdi for Simon Burkhardt

2. December 2022

Our MSE student, Simon Burkhardt, did a semester abroad with internship at Linköping University. With his internship report he won the second prize at the “Prix Bartholdi”.

The Master program at the FHNW (Master of Science in Engineering, MSE) lasts three semesters – with a simultaneous employment at 50% as a research assistant it takes six semesters. It is entirely possible to spend a semester abroad, but this presents some organizational challenges. Simon Burkhardt, MSE student and assistant at ISE, overcame these challenges and traveled to Linköping, Sweden, for one semester. With his internship report he participated in the Prix Bartholdi competition and won the 2nd prize. With his internship report he participated in the Prix Bartholdi competition and won the 2nd prize. The Prix Bartholdi is awarded annually by an association based in Colmar (Alsace) with the aim of strengthening the trinational metropolitan region of the Upper Rhine (Alsace, Baden, Switzerland) as a knowledge and business location. It is named after the Colmar-born sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904), whose best-known work is the Statue of Liberty in New York.

In his internship report “from 0 to 100 Gb/s in one semester” Simon Burkhardt also shows what he did and achieved technically on his project. Before that, he explained very vividly how he took the initiative for the exchange semester, how he organized his stay, his studies and his project at Linköping University in southern Sweden, and what he experienced with his professors and fellow students at the Institute of Systems Engineering ISY and (widely…) around it. His conclusion was: “This international exchange took place for me in familiar surroundings as an electrical engineer at a technical institute. As a result, the big gain in new impressions was not in engineering, but rather in social exchange. Living within this international environment revealed to me how much I enjoy working with people and making connections.”
Simon Burkhardt received the award in St. Louis from Sarah Endress, President of the Georg H. Endress Foundation.
