Team-Event 2022 on the Jungfraujoch

27. September 2022

The ISE traveled to the Jungfraujoch for its team event. The destination was not only the tourist “Top of Europe”, but also the research station with ISE’s contribution to aerosol research.

The Jungfraujoch is worth the trip alone: the view of the Bernese and Valais Alps is tremendous, the view of the largest glacier in the Alps, the Aletsch Glacier with the Konkordiaplatz, is imposing.

OK – the view would have been tremendous and imposing if we hadn’t been standing in the fog after getting off the Jungfrau Railway….

A group waits outside the research station. The view of the Alps lies in the fog…

But first we visited the research station on the Jungfraujoch. The operations control couple showed us the station with the projects, the recreation rooms, the infrastructure for operation. One of the important activities in the research station is the measurement of aerosols in the atmosphere, to which the ISE itself contributes with FATCAT. FATCAT is a system for monitoring aerosols containing carbon. was developed with support from Global Athmosphere Watch Global Athmosphere Watch (See report: GAW-CH Science projects 2018-2021) for this monitoring station.

And this picture shows the FATCAT integrated with all other aerosol measuring instruments in the research station.

The fog then lifted in the course of the morning: for the members of the ISE team from other projects, who were able to see here how “our” equipment contributes to research at the “Top of Europe” level and what else is being worked on at the Jungfraujoch.

Operations manager Thomas Furter shows us the difference between Saharan dust samples on the Jungfraujoch (orange filter bottom left) and from city air samples from Bern (black filter bottom right). Mostly, however, the filter samples on the Jungfraujoch look blank (filter top left).

But the fog cleared outside as well, allowing even those ISE members who had never been able to experience the fantastic view to see the alpine world.

Aletsch Glacier

Of course, “team building” was not neglected during this excursion – young and old, veterans and fresh employees, professors and master’s students got closer and exchanged many stories with “factual relevance” or even completely off the subject…

Dr. Alejandro Keller will be happy to provide further information on the FATCAT project. He also organized the excursion together with Silvia Rüegger – many thanks to both of them!
