Analytical Chemistry – Career Opportunities
The Analytical Chemistry specialisation gives students an excellent foundation for work in industrial and academic fields. Analytical Chemistry provides core technologies at the interface of almost all life science disciplines, for example it plays a central role in the investigation of drugs, formulations, metabolites, foodstuffs, natural products, materials as well as medical products. Demand for analytical chemistry specialists is continuously rising as technological developments and an increasing demand for deeper insights into biological systems on a molecular level drive research activities in life sciences. Consequently, studying analytical chemistry provides exceptional local, national and global work opportunities.
Analytical Chemistry – Curriculum
Analytical Chemistry is designed to provide students with a solid understanding of the principles and core technologies of analytical chemistry. Modules focus on analytical strategies for investigation, characterization identification and imaging of metabolites, biomarkers, proteins, drug formulations and tissues of living biological systems. The impact of modern mass spectrometry and NMR spectroscopy on life science applications are addressed in two modules, where state of the art technologies are studied (e.g., high-resolution MS/MS 2D NMR techniques, including pulsed field gradients, and rapid data acquisition). Investigation of protein structures, solid state characterization and translational imaging of biological systems are addressed in two other dedicated modules.
Further modules can be chosen from related specializations, in particular Organic and Supramolecular Chemistry, Bioanalytics, Applied Cell Biology, Biotechnology and Pharmatechnology. The broad range of specialist and generic modules allows each student to create an individually tailored study programme.
Students may also take an extra semester at a foreign partner university, allowing them to gain an additional degree.
The MSc concludes with an eight month thesis, usually conducted on site at one of the industrial partners in our network. Alternatively, the thesis can be carried out at any university world-wide which meets our standards. The eight month thesis forms the basis for successful employment in industry or in academia.
In summary, the programme is designed to prepare students optimally for a career in analytical chemistry, bioanalytics or related fields including the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical sectors.

The MSc in Life Sciences – Analytical Chemistry is especially suited for students with a BSc degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Pharmacy or related fields.

Admission
Graduates with an excellent Bachelor's degree are admitted directly if they:
- hold a Bachelor's degree in a related technical field from a university of applied sciences with a mark of A, B or ≥ 5 or an equivalent mark (≥ good)
- or demonstrate an equivalent background (BSc) and practical experience
- and have excellent English skills.
