      Mesh – Keynote von Paco Calvo mit Panel: Über die Intelligenz von Pflanzen

      Im Rahmen des Programms «Talks & Panels» am Mesh-Festival findet am Freitag, 18. Oktober 2024 ein Panel mit einer Keynote von Paco Calvo und einem Beitrag von Ayênan Quinchoa Juajibioy in der Aula der HGK Basel statt.

      Im Rahmen des Programms «Talks & Panels» am Mesh-Festival findet am Freitag, 18. Oktober 2024, um 18 Uhr ein Panel mit einer Keynote von Paco Calvo und einem Beitrag von Ayênan Quinchoa Juajibioy vom Pan-Amazon Collective aus Kolumbien in der Aula der HGK Basel statt. Am Panel, das von Dr. Yvonne Volkart, Leiterin Forschung am Institute Art Gender Nature (IAGN) an der HGK Basel, moderiert wird, nehmen folgende Mitglieder des an der HGK Basel angesiedelten Forschungsprojekts Plants_Intelligence teil: Dr. Felipe Castelblanco, Post-Doc, künstlerische Forschung; Julia Mensch, Doktorandin, künstlerische Forschung; und Dr. Rasa Smite, künstlerische Forschung.

      Der gegenwärtige Hype um KI – die im Prinzip nur ressourcenintensives, auf Data Mining und roher Kraft beruhendes Rechnen ist – lässt uns vergessen, dass es ganz andere, viel «effizientere» und lustvollere Formen von Intelligenz gibt: Formen, die offen sind für die Vielheit der Wesen der Erde, die Beziehungen und spielerische Formen speziesübergreifender Allianzen schaffen.

      Besonders Pflanzen, diese missachteten Geschöpfe, überraschen durch ihre ausgeklügelten Fähigkeiten mit den ökologischen Gegebenheiten umzugehen. Im Mittelpunkt dieses Panels geht es um die Frage, wie Pflanzen spüren und prozessieren, entscheiden und handeln. Was bedeutet das? Was können Menschen davon lernen? Und weswegen ist das relevant für Kunst, Technik, Wissenschaft und Gesellschaft?

      Paco Calvo ist ein renommierter Kognitionswissenschaftler und Philosoph der Biologie. Er ist für seine bahnbrechenden Forschungen auf dem Gebiet der Kognition und Intelligenz von Pflanzen bekannt. Er ist Professor an der Universität Murcia in Spanien, wo er das Minimal Intelligence Lab (MINT Lab) leitet. Dieses beschäftigt sich mit der Erforschung minimaler Kognition bei Pflanzen.

      Paco Calvos interdisziplinäre Arbeit kombiniert Erkenntnisse aus Biologie, Philosophie und Kognitionswissenschaft, um die faszinierende Welt des Verhaltens, der Entscheidungsfindung und der Problemlösung bei Pflanzen zu erforschen. Durch die Erforschung der komplexen Interaktionen und adaptiven Reaktionen von Pflanzen hat Paco Calvo wesentlich zu unserem Verständnis von Kognition jenseits des Tierreichs beigetragen und herkömmliche Sichtweisen auf Intelligenz und geistige Fähigkeiten in Frage gestellt.

      Das Panel «For Plant Intelligence» im Rahmen des Mesh-Festival wird von einem gleichnamigen Workshop begleitet, der am 18./19.       Das Forschungsprojekt Plants_Intelligence wird vom Schweizerischen Nationalfonds (SNF) gefördert und ist dem Institute Art Gender Nature (IAGN) an der HGK Basel angegliedert.

      As part of the ‘Talks & Panels’ programme at the Mesh Festival, a panel with a keynote by Paco Calvo and a contribution by Ayênan Quinchoa Juajibioy from the Pan-Amazon Collective from Colombia will take place on Friday, 18 October 2024, at 6 pm in the auditorium of the HGK Basel. The panel, which will be moderated by Dr Yvonne Volkart, Head of Research at the Institute Art Gender Nature (IAGN) at the HGK Basel, will be attended by the following members of the Plants_Intelligence research project based at the HGK Basel: Dr Felipe Castelblanco, post-doc, artistic research; Julia Mensch, PhD student, artistic research; and Dr Rasa Smite, artistic research.

      The current hype around AI - which is basically just resource-intensive computing based on data mining and brute force - makes us forget that there are completely different, much more ‘efficient’ and pleasurable forms of intelligence: Forms that are open to the multiplicity of beings on earth, that create relationships and playful forms of cross-species alliances.

      Plants in particular, these disregarded creatures, surprise us with their ingenious abilities to deal with ecological conditions. At the centre of this panel is the question of how plants sense and process, decide and act. What does this mean? What can humans learn from this? And why is this relevant for art, technology, science and society?

      Paco Calvo is a renowned cognitive scientist and philosopher of biology. He is known for his pioneering research in the field of plant cognition and intelligence. He is a professor at the University of Murcia in Spain, where he heads the Minimal Intelligence Lab (MINT Lab). This lab focuses on research into minimal cognition in plants.

      Paco Calvo's interdisciplinary work combines insights from biology, philosophy and cognitive science to explore the fascinating world of behaviour, decision-making and problem-solving in plants. By exploring the complex interactions and adaptive responses of plants, Paco Calvo has contributed significantly to our understanding of cognition beyond the animal kingdom and challenged conventional views of intelligence and mental abilities.

      The panel ‘For Plant Intelligence’ at the Mesh Festival will be accompanied by a workshop of the same name, which will take place on 18/19 October at the Institute Art Gender Nature (IAGN) at the HGK Basel. Interested parties are welcome and can register at: valentina.zingg@students.fhnw.ch
