Lecturer
“What fascinates me as a designer is curiosity about what lies ahead, and then focussing on it.”
Evelyne Roth is a designer and a lecturer on the BA in Fashion Design, the MA Master’s Studio ICDP and the cross-institute CoCreate programme of the FHNW Academy of Art and Design. She has held posts at a number of institutions as an expert in Design Thinking and Forecasting. Questioning common processes in the fashion industry, attempting to break with them and launching products that make a contemporary statement are all part of her holistic brief as a designer. Her practice and teaching in design focus on circular design, research, conception and materiality.
She is working on her doctoral thesis entitled “Circular design processes, alteration in aesthetics, methods, and practices in fashion” as part of the MAKE/SENSE PhD programme, a collaboration between the FHNW Academy of Art and Design and the University of Arts Linz. (PhD teaser). Specifically, she is researching the relevance of repair and looking at possible design modalities in future circular processes. REPAIR!_Fashion, the title of the paper, should be viewed in the context of a systemic and structural change in fashion.
She has won the Swiss Federal Design Prize and several advancement awards from the Bern Design Foundation. She is also a recipient of the Goldene Hase award from architecture magazine Hochparterre. From 2015 to 2020, she was artistic director for the Kontext format at Swiss Textiles. She is a member of Intercolor (International and Interdisciplinary Platform of Color), an external advisor to the Forecast Board of Première Vision in Paris, and a member of the Board of Trustees and Technical Committee of the Bern Design Foundation. She has been its Vice-President since February 2022. And she is the expert jury member in the fields of fashion and textiles for the 2023/2024 cycle of the Swiss Design Awards organised by the Federal Office of Culture. Together with Gregor Steinke, a lecturer at the FHNW School of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geomatics / Institute for Sustainability and Energy in Civil Engineering, she heads the FHNW’s Sustainability Salon, an active exchange network on key topics of sustainability for the staff of all nine of the FHNW schools, because she thinks far beyond her activities as a designer.
Evelyne Roth and her partner, the designer Daniel Ledermann, jointly run the design, consulting and forecasting office ROTHLEDERMANN.
