Biocycle economy
We aim to develop concepts and processes that extract biochemical feedstocks, biogas and nutrients from biodegradable residues to create value and safely return them to production systems or the environment. Biodegradable residues that are investigated in the SRM group are food and agro-industrial residues, such as e.g., coffee, okara and wheat. Wastewater is also a part of the biocycle from which by treatment nutrients and water can be recovered to restore natural resources. We investigate the biogas and nutrient recovery potential from biodegradable residues before and after fractionation, i.e. after extraction of targeted biochemical feedstocks. We investigate plant nutrients (N, P, K) as well as macronutrient recycling for animal feeds, e.g. proteins. We build on a well-equipped laboratory and strong partnerships with other research institutes and technology providers for experimental designs and analyses. We holistically conceptualize and assess trade-offs and synergies between the multiple recovery and recycling pathways of biodegradable residues and their fractions and develop business models for their valorization.
