What is Business Information Technology?

As a business informatics specialist, you work at the interface between business, information technology and innovation. You speak the language of business as well as the language of information technology. Your communication skills allow you to bridge the gap between the two fields. You hold discussions with all the Stakeholders and recognise their needs and requirements. You are also familiar with the challenges and processes of companies. At the same time, you know the technical possibilities of information technology and digitalisation. In this way, you ensure optimal interaction and actively participate in the further development and optimisation of your company.

As a business information technology specialist you will find broad opportunities for varied roles in IT services and consulting or in the IT departments of companies and public administrations. In your job you have to consider the needs of users while being aware of the technical, organisational and financial resources available. To find the best possible solution you will liaise with internal and external partners and use appropriate models to describe your findings.

Your studies will equip you with the ability to systematically analyse big data within an organisation and actively shape business processes. You can work in a consulting role to develop new e-business services and prepare the successful launch of new products. As you gain experience you will develop leadership skills, effectively driving the digital aspects of a corporate strategy.

Previous programming knowledge is not necessary

The lessons are designed in a way that no previous programming experience is required. However, interest in analytical thinking and problem solving is expected.

Areas of Specialisation

The specialisations take place in the last year of the degree programme (20 ECTS credits, 10 ECTS credits per semester) and will be listed in the diploma. This allows you to compile an individual study portfolio based on your interests and career aspirations. The fields of study cover the needs of the labour market and make an important contribution to addressing the shortage of skilled workers in the IT environment.

Whether you are a project manager, consultant, business analyst or a cybersecurity expert, your job will be to make meaningful technical and business innovation happen. 3. Learn to see things from a different point of view

With us you will learn how business and information technology meet. After your studies you will be equally familiar with the challenges organisations face, the processes they have in place, and the technical possibilities of IT. You will be able to weigh up the benefits and limitations of digital solutions to move the business forward. You will understand the concerns of IT teams as of well as executives, and will be able to see things from different perspective.

4. Become an expert in working with people

As a BIT student you will learn the skills you need to work with people in a professional and structured manner. You will gain experience in dealing with customers, presenting your solutions to management, and working in teams. You will be able to bring projects to a successful conclusion because you understand the perspectives and needs of the people involved.

5. Learn business and IT from scratch

Have you completed a commercial apprenticeship, but have no experience in programming? Or are you comfortable with technology, but not yet familiar with accounting? A bachelor’s degree in business IT may then just be the right thing for you.

Our students come from a wide range of different educational and vocational backgrounds. You do not need any prior knowledge of business or IT as we teach you what you need to know step by step during your studies. You will make quicker progress in areas you already know something about and can invest the time in subjects that are new to you.

Full-time, part-time

The full-time Bachelor of Science programme (BSc) can be completed in six semesters and the part-time programme in eight semesters. The part-time model is designed for people who have a job, participate in a sport or care for others.

While working as a qualified employee

Students who can evidence that they worked at least 50% throughout their studies as qualified commercial employees will be awarded up to 15 credit points if they submit an additional paper related to their employment. They can either be salaried employees or self-employed.

Introduction week
Your studies start with an introduction week in september (week 37).

Degree program
Your degree involves taking modules in five groups. The Specialisation and Elective modules are an opportunity to pursue your interests in more depth. You will receive ECTS credits for every module you complete successfully. You need to achieve 180 points for your bachelor’s degree. Module overview

In the practice project you will gain first hand experience of the challenges faced by companies. You will use the knowledge gained to work out solutions for practice, working in small groups in the company. The tasks are varied and keep pace with technological change.

You will take a fresh approach to analysing processes in the company and making suggestions for improvement. For example, you will assist the company in choosing business software, provide support in business processes and contribute your ideas to topics like cloud computing or data management. You will experience the impact of applying the competencies you gained in your studies. A successful project may even lead to a job after you have completed your studies.

The bachelor thesis completes your course of studies. Student projects

Our good connections with universities abroad pave the way for an exchange semester. Credits obtained at a partner university can be counted towards your degree if proof of performance is provided. Tuition fees qualify for attendance of any Bachelor course within FHNW, independent of the particular enrolment at a faculty.
