Every day, we view and interact with a wide range of information on various monitors. The terms UX and UI design describe the process of designing these interactions and information.
The “UX/UI Design” workshop teaches the theoretical and creative basics of screen design. The workshop focuses on practical work. Course participants will develop their own interactive application through conceptualization, prototyping, and detailed design. Design principles for user guidance (navigation, editing & manipulation, and user assistance) and screen design (digital layouts, colour, and typography) are discussed in-depth. Aspects of user research and user testing will be discussed, but are not the main focus of this workshop week. Instead, the use of the Figma program as a tool will be taught.

Thomas Bircher is a UX designer and programmer working as a lecturer at the Basel Academy of Art and Design FHNW and the Rapperswil University of Applied Sciences East. As co-founder of Claudiabasel, a graphic design agency, he is responsible for the conception, design, and programming of countless websites, online applications, and information systems for commercial and cultural institutions. In both his work and teaching, Thomas Bircher explores the tension between aesthetics and usability. Thomas Bircher develops tools and interfaces allowing new forms of interaction to be tested
The Institute Digital Communication Environments (IDCE) offers workshops for students, educators and graphic designers.
The workshops afford insights into topical themes of visual communication for analogue and digital communication channels in a study programme reflecting the rich tradition of the Basel School of Design. Practical exercises with a high level of professionalism form the core of the workshops focus. Reflection as well as contextual knowledge will be conveyed by way of input sessions, allowing participants’ work to be judged within a contemporary, future-oriented context relevant to professional practice. The trinational Rhine River Valley is a unique cultural environment with easy access to France and Germany and to sites such as the Vitra Design Museum (G), the Isenheimer Alter (F), or Ronchamps (F). In Basel, the Fondation Beyeler, Tinguely Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, Schaulager, and Museum of Contemporary Art are world-renowned. Besides its museums, Basel offers a rich mixture of cultural events.
Design skills are an advantage (layout, colour, and typography). It is advisable to install the Figma program in advance and familiarize yourself with its functions (tutorials). Although Figma will be introduced step by step in the workshop, prior knowledge will make it easier to realize your own ideas..
Designers who want to familiarize themselves with the basics of UX/UI design. Interested parties who would like to deepen their knowledge in a specific area of UI design are requested to contact Thomas Bircher.

Institute Digital Communication Environments (IDCE)
Through digital media and the democratisation of communication channels that goes hand in hand with it, the critical handling of their visual and interaction-based design has become decisively more important, because the social relevance of information and communication has thus fundamentally changed.
